One thing we know for sure is that many food writers secretly long to be narrative authors of one sort or another. What they do instead is kind-of hide behind recipes and (to their surprise) that takes so much creative energy they then don't have the capacity to tackle the bigger, bolder creative writing projects. They wind up living their Plan B – never even starting their dream book, yet always wondering what might have been.

Story Club is going to put an end to that.

It's a series of Zoom workshops in which we study narrative food books – novels, memoirs, big idea non-fiction – not just chatting about whether or not we liked them, but looking at why/how/when/where/if they work.

Trust us: when you see, experience and compare real life examples of effective writing, you will be better able to produce it yourself. Think this could be the kickstart you need? Then come along to a session and see what you think.

YES, I WANT IN!

Tools you
can use

Unlike regular book clubs, ffoice Story Club is all about helping you become a better writer. We'll be breaking down each work, looking at how it's been put together and identifying the tricks each author uses to create the effects they want.

The more you absorb these storytelling techniques, and learn to recognise them, the more they'll show up in your own writing – in everything from captions, blogs and reviews to long form essays and those early experimental drafts of your dream project.

Turn up every session and it could start to feel like you're getting a university-level education at a remarkably lidl price.

"Stumbling on your group was like winning the lottery – the advice and support has been tremendous."

Want to be a better writer? You need to read widely, 100%.  But carefully too. That's what we'll be doing in this series of classes.

We'll be looking at the many  ways food is incorporated in narrative books and considering: could any of these formats be right for you?

Not every book's for every body. Hearing the candid opinions of peers will help you clarify your thinking and forge your own path.

Your best new book club awaits

This September we're reading The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender. Time Out New York said it's 'one of the most inventive pieces of food writing in recent memory,' but we want to know what YOU think!
